THE STORY

Commissioned by the club to celebrate 50 years at the MCG.

Renowned artist Jamie Cooper, painter of our Team of the Century and Hall of Fame canvases, has brought together the greatest Tigers spanning half a century, into one real life, on field game scene at the G.

The focal point centres around the most iconic image in the club’s rich history on the MCG; Royce Hart’s colossal grab in the 1967 Grand Final. Perched up alongside him is another high-flying great, a young Matthew Richardson. Beneath them swirl a collection of players that would make any Tiger fan’s head spin.

Roger Dean, Maurice Rioli, Trent Cotchin, Barry Rowlings and the Flea create a fortress of midfielders beneath the pack, awaiting the crumbs that on this occasion, will not come.

Woven into the scene are a few other memorable moments from the G and a few old scores are settled too. The back pocket plumber, Kevin Sheedy is making sure that Bruce Doull is kept quiet via an old fashion hip and shoulder, 1970’s style. Just to be sure, Billy Barrot comes through to finish him off and send the headband flying! Geoff Raines looks on as does Brett Deledio who gets an up close look at footy in a different era. Keep your eyes open “Lids”.

The great Ian Stewart patrols the pack as ‘The Ghost’ Jimmy Jess looks on at this Tigers treasure trove!

In the background, Laurie Fowler takes out big Nick in that famous clash in the 1973 Grand Final, that set the tone for the Tiger’s attitude that day. But the Tigers didn’t have it all their own way in the battles on field as we see at right Matthew Knights famously tangling with Libba. But what better man to come to your aid in a crisis than Francis Bourke.

Awaiting the outcome are Michael Roach and Barry Richardson in the goal square. And of course Tommy Hafey looks on intensely from the boundary line.

This is all set against the backdrop of a sunbathed MCG southern stand late on a Saturday afternoon in September, sometime in the early 1970’s.

The 2.7 x 1.4 original oil painting was auctioned at the Homecoming event on July 11th 2015 for a whopping $80,000, with the purchaser, Geoff Bailey being painted into the scene as the runner.
